Hotel VW

The Idea

Hotel VW
Is a musical and sound adventure based upon a journey through sound from East to West in a a VW camper converted into a recording studio. The trip is undertaken by Peter Mossman, a sound engineer, producer and musician, and also Per Liebeck, a documentary film maker / director. The goal is to find the sound of a place and get an understanding of why a place sounds the way it does and what influence it has on the local culture. Is it possible to get deeper into a societies culture through its sound?

Peter Mossman is a Scottish musician and producer living in dk. He has amongst many other projects and albums, provided music for such compilations as Buddha Bar, and his latest CD N.E.W. Sound Experience sold more than 16.000 albums world wide. Last year DR2 made a documentary, named 'Musik I X-il' which portrayed Peter Mossmans life in Denmark. Watch the film at http://www.outofphase.dk/documentary.htm.

Peter lives and breathes music and the passion has always been ethnic lounge music. His dream is to take the trip from Thailand to Denmark to discover music and instruments we've never heard of before, play with local musicians, get inspired and bring inspiration as well, and of course- record it all!

The plan is to buy an old VW camper in Thailand, convert it into a mobile sound studio and journey through countries such as Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, China, India, Nepal, Egypt, Turkey, Rumania, , Eastern Europe etc.

As we travel, we'll get acquainted to the mystic voices of the Longhorn Miao-tribe in the southern China, the people who sing cross the valleys to their loved ones, Percussion from Thailand and Laos, flutes from other parts of China, Tibetan horns, Indian sitars and a symphony of other instruments and music that we've never heard of before!

Peter records a ground-track, which will be advanced as we travel further. The goal is to record a CD while travelling, which will be released soon after upon returning to Denmark.

Peter speaks fluent Danish and of course, a natural talented Scottish. He is a well-adjusted, reflecting person and has a brilliant way of formulating himself.

The work-title and the project 'Hotel VW' renown itself to the successful  Hotel-CD-releases, just as the van will be home and recording studio for some months.

The film:

The film begins in Thailand where Peter Mossman buys an old VW, which he turns into a mobile recording-studio. The trip goes through countries such as Thailand, Laos, China, Tibet, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, West of Europe etc.

In every country we will focus on the music and culture due to the element. We will follow Peter in small villages far out at the country side, in big cities, in the mountains and all other environments where we will encounter the musicians and their families and thereby get to know more about their country and culture.

We will ask the musicians to bring their interpretation of various themes, such as. Anger, grief, happiness, the society, the political life, so the music that is created is also a poetic interpretation of the life and society in these countries.

The film will work in different layers:

-The music as a poetic, dream like  and interpreting element

-The countries where we get to know the culture through the local musicians and

their families, in their natural environment

-Peters journey, where we get to know him; what is his drive, his perception of the music, his expectations, how will he develop during the trip, how will he deal with situations as they arise.

The film will, of course, in the best possible way, show a great range within the countries we visit. An understanding of globalisation through music. We wish to present the spectators to an amazing chance to create an impression of the word and the countries through their music and also reveal instruments we didn't know yet existed.

The drive in the film consists of the countries, their culture/music and the people that live in it.

The intention is to create a big focus on the project through the film, the album-release, the update radio-shows, the newspaper-diaries and the net-site. The journey should take off in the beginning of 2006 and the whole trip is set to stretch over 3 months.

The production company Open Sky Film is a smaller Danish production-company which has mostly produced documentaries. Recently produced is the series 'Danske pionerer' ; four films which is comprised of young Danish pioneers. The documentary is going to be used in DR-educational.
